In 2018, NSFAS was converted into a fully-fledged bursary scheme NSFAS bursaries cover the full cost of studying, including tuition fees, accommodation, learning materials, transport, and personal care allowances. NSFAS also provides support for students with disabilities and special needs, such as assistive devices, human support, and reasonable accommodation.

Who is eligible for NSFAS funding?

You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident.

NSFAS funding is only available to South African citizens or permanent residents who have a valid South African identity document. If you are a refugee or asylum seeker, you must have a valid refugee or asylum seeker permit to qualify for NSFAS.

You must come from a household with a combined annual income of not more than R350 000 (or R600 000 for students with disabilities).

NSFAS funding is meant for students from poor and working-class families who cannot afford to pay for their education. Therefore, you must provide proof of your household income and any other sources of income when you apply for NSFAS. If your household income exceeds the threshold, you will not be eligible for NSFAS funding.

You must register for an approved qualification at a public university or TVET college.

NSFAS funding is only applicable to public institutions of higher learning that are accredited by the DHET. You must register for an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification that is approved by NSFAS and your institution. You can check the list of approved qualifications on the NSFAS website or contact your institution for more information.

You must meet the academic requirements and progress rules of NSFAS and your institution.

NSFAS funding is not guaranteed for the duration of your studies. You must meet the minimum academic requirements and progress rules of NSFAS and your institution to continue receiving NSFAS funding. This means that you must pass at least 50% of your courses each year and complete your qualification within the minimum plus two years. If you fail to do so, you may lose your NSFAS funding or be required to repay some or all of it.

How to apply for NSFAS online?

You need to create a myNSFAS account on the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za.

The first step to apply for NSFAS online is to create a myNSFAS account on the NSFAS website. You will need a valid email address, a cell phone number, and your ID number to create an account. You must ensure that all the documents are clear and legible and that they are not older than three months. You must also ensure that you upload all the documents before submitting your application.

You need to submit your application before the closing date, which is usually in November of the preceding year.

The final step is to submit your application before the closing date. The closing date for NSFAS applications is usually in November of the preceding year.
