What is Form 26AS and why is it important for filing ITR?




Form 26AS is an annual consolidated tax statement that shows the details of tax deducted at source (TDS), tax collected at source (TCS), advance tax paid, self-assessment tax paid, refund received, and high-value transactions entered into by a taxpayer during a financial year. Form 26AS is linked to your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and can be viewed and downloaded from the TRACES website. Part B: Details of Tax Collected at Source




This part shows the details of TCS collected from you by various collectors such as e-commerce operators, sellers of motor vehicles, etc. It also shows the name and TAN of each collector , the section under which TCS is collected, and the amount received or debited and collected for each transaction.

Part C: Details of Tax Paid (other than TDS or TCS)




This part shows the details of tax paid by you directly to the income tax department, such as advance tax, self-assessment tax, regular assessment tax, etc. It also shows the BSR code and challan number of each payment, the date of deposit, and the amount of tax paid.


Part D: Details of Paid Refund




This part shows the details of refund paid to you by the income tax department, such as refund of excess tax paid, interest on refund, etc. It also shows the mode of payment, the date of payment, and the amount of refund paid.


Part E: Details of SFT Transaction




This part shows the details of specified financial transactions (SFT) entered into by you during the financial year, such as purchase or sale of immovable property, shares, mutual funds, bonds, debentures, etc. It also shows the name and PAN of each party involved in the transaction, the date and value of the transaction, and the type and nature of the transaction.


Part F: Details of Tax Deducted at Source on sale of Immovable Property




This part shows the details of TDS deducted from you by the buyer of your immovable property under section 194IA. It also shows the name and PAN of the buyer, the date and amount of payment or credit, and the amount of TDS deducted.


Part G: TDS Defaults (processing of Statements)




This part shows the details of any defaults or errors in TDS deducted or deposited by your deductor. It also shows the nature and amount of default or error, such as short deduction, short payment, late payment interest, late filing fee, etc.


Part H: Details of Turnover as per GSTR-3B




This part shows the details of turnover reported by you in your monthly GST returns (GSTR-3B) for each month during the financial year. It also shows the total turnover for each month and for the whole year.


How to download Form 26AS in Excel format?




Form 26AS can be downloaded in various formats such as PDF, HTML, XML, or text file. However, if you want to download it in Excel format, you need to follow these steps:


Step 1: Login to TRACES portal




To access Form 26AS online, you need to login to TRACES portal using your PAN and password. You can also login through net banking facility of your bank account or through e-filing portal of income tax department.


Step 2: Download the Form 26AS zip file




After logging in to TRACES portal, go to 'My Account' tab and click on 'View Form 26AS (Tax Credit)'. Select the assessment year for which you want to download Form 26AS and click on 'View/Download'. Choose 'Text' as the file format and click on 'Download'. A zip file containing Form 26AS will be downloaded to your computer.


Step 3: Extract the text file and copy the data to MS Excel worksheet




To open the zip file, you need to enter a password which is your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. After extracting the zip file, you will get a text file containing Form 26AS data. Open this text file using Notepad or any other text editor and copy all the data to a blank MS Excel worksheet.


Step 4: Convert the text file into Excel columns using delimiter




To convert the text file into Excel columns, you need to use a delimiter which is a character that separates each field in Form 26AS. The delimiter used in Form 26AS is '^'. To use this delimiter in MS Excel, go to 'Data' tab and click on 'Text to Columns'. Choose 'Delimited' as the data type and click on 'Next'. In the next screen, uncheck all other delimiters except 'Other' and enter '^' in the text box. Click on 'Next' and 'Finish'. The text file will be converted into Excel columns with each field in a separate column.

Form 26AS is an important document that helps you to file your ITR accurately and claim the correct amount of tax credit.
